At Kirkby Avenue Primary School, we believe that teaching and learning in science should stimulate and excite children’s curiosity about the world around them. It should provide first hand experiences and support for children to develop enquiring minds, learning how to question and discuss science through collaboration. We have a big focus on oracy and key vocabulary. A planned range of practical experiences set in meaningful contexts helps to develop a range of investigative skills and allows children to take risks and learn from their mistakes, developing them into independent learners. We follow the National Curriculum and our own very specific and thorough scheme to support and aid the learning of all pupils' to ensure they reach their potential. We use formative and summative assessments and also use Rising Stars tests. Every year, we hold a science week in school which is designed to give the children a sense of awe and wonder; our latest science week was all about 'Time' as this was the 2024 focus. We also completed whole school comparisons by looking at the length of our shadows and how they change as we get older.
