Reading at Kirkby Avenue Primary School
We believe that creating a culture of positive reading is a vital tool in ensuring our children are given the best possible life chances. Cultivating readers with a passion and enthusiasm for a wide range of materials, will ensure that children’s love of reading will extend far beyond the classroom, allowing them to build on their skills independently, through a real curiosity and thirst for knowledge.
At Kirkby Avenue Primary School we use RWI Phonics books and the Oxford Reading Tree scheme which is enriched with other age and ability appropriate reading material that is recommended by the National Literacy Trust, the Whiston Worrygoose English Hub alongside other charitable organisations whose core purpose is to support reading and literacy in schools. Our scheme runs throughout the whole primary phase to ensure children are accessing the right reading material to help them make progress with their decoding skills, be exposed to new vocabulary and improve their comprehension skills. If you believe that there are books you think your children will enjoy, please let us know as we are keen to keep our library well stocked with reading books that will inspire young readers.
At Kirkby Avenue Primary School we have a scheme that we carefully match to children's ability. Many of our books are from Oxford Reading Tree, however, we compliment this with a wide range of other books, at the appropriate level, so that the children's interest in reading is maintained.
You can access many online ebooks to read and share together. We encourage you to read lots of different things such as recipe cards, magazines, books, sports programmes or anything your child is interested in and inspire them to become enthusiastic, independent readers. Our children love these types of reading materials in our Reading Nook!
If you need any help when looking at choosing appropriate books to read at home. Please ask your child's teacher.
KAPS Reading Ambassadors
Being a Reading Ambassador is all about reading for pleasure and sharing the deep enjoyment of reading a great book. Our KS2 Reading Ambassadors had to apply for the role and have been chosen for their love of reading and their enthusiasm to share this with others. Part of the job of a Reading Ambassador is to encourage others in school to read more, and find their own love of reading.
There is much research that shows children who read regularly at home perform better at school. As well as being beneficial to learning, it is also lots of fun when you find the right types of books for you!
September 2024
Last year, our Reading Ambassadors were involved in lots of exciting activities, including reading at lunchtimes outside with our wonderful reading suitcases, preparing a Christmas and Easter themed reading competitions, reading with to the younger children in school and keeping the Reading Nook tidy!
This term, our new Reading Ambassadors will be involved in promoting reading further, running a reading assembly, being the Library and Reading Nook monitors and preparing our first Reading competition of the year...they are going to be busy!
