Autumn Term
Our topic this term is 'Our Wonderful World'. During this term we will be learning lots of things daily such as English/Phonics, Maths and Spelling. We will also be learning about our topic.
In Science, we will be learning about... Everyday Materials! We will identify and name a variety of objects and learn what material they are made of. We will investigate materials and describe the simple physical properties, finding out how objects change shape if they are squashed, twisted, stretched etc. We will also look at the suitability of different materials for particular purposes as part of our investigations. What materials do you know? What materials could you use to make a spoon?
In Geography, we will be learning about … Our Wonderful World! As well as looking at our local wonders we will explore and compare national wonders. We will identify countries that we come across in our learning, and add them to a map. We will be starting to learn the names of the continents. What are the wonders of our world? Do you have any special places that you like to visit which you would recommend to us?
In History, we will begin to learn about … Standing up for what is right! We will study significant individuals who have stood up for what is right including Rosa Parks, Emily Davison and Nelson Mandela. We will be looking at how they fought for change and what the outcomes were once they had stood up for what is right. Do you know anything about any of these famous people? Do you know why they are famous and what they did to make changes in History?
In other areas of the Curriculum, we will begin to find out about 'Being me in my world' linked to our PSHCE, answer questions in RE such as 'Who is Jewish and what do they believe?' learn greetings in French and find out about the artist 'Paul Cezanne' in Art. Do you know who he is or what type of art he created?
Please see below our Parent Forecast for more information and if you have any questions just ask!

Homework
This term in Cherry class we have a homework menu about ‘Our Wonderful World’ which links to our topic in class. Please complete an activity each week and return the homework by Wednesday.
The children will also need to complete their spellings to for a spelling test on Monday’s each week! Any problems please come and see an adult in Cherry class before Wednesday.
Apart from the obvious benefits of improving reading skills, by encouraging children to read regularly, it can improve their imagination, spelling and punctuation accuracy. Reading also improves their concentration and vocabulary. The habit also makes children more stylish writers, as they copy elements of authors they have enjoyed and adopt these as their own. Children who read for pleasure are far more academically successful than those that don’t. So it really is a no-brainer: good reading habits make successful children.
By reading regularly with you and discussing the situation that characters find themselves in, children have an invaluable opportunity to help build empathy skills. For example, if a character in a book is being treated unkindly by a classmate, it gives a ‘safe space’ for relationships and treatment of others to be discussed in a situation where children can be objective and measured, rather than approaching the issue with bias and heightened emotion, as may often be the case when these situations arise in their real lives.
