Our Curriculum

Our curriculum leads to the necessary development of language and communication skills which our children require to succeed in life. Through our rich, diverse and varied curriculum, our children become confident, resilient and independent learners who have a passion and enthusiasm for learning and who are able to express their opinions and beliefs once they move on to the next stage of their lives. Leaders adopt or construct a curriculum that is ambitious and designed to give all pupils, particularly disadvantaged pupils and including pupils with SEND, the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. This is either the national curriculum or a curriculum of comparable breadth and ambition.

Maths Intent

Children become confident, competent and independent mathematicians.

They build a deep understanding of Maths, so that they can apply their learning in different situations.

They develop their ability to articulate, discuss and explain their thinking using appropriate mathematical vocabulary.

'Mistake friendly' classrooms where children see mistakes as learning tools - an emphasis placed on developing the power to 'think' rather that just 'do.'

Instil the mind-set in every child and staff member that everyone can do Maths and Maths is for everyone!

Help children to develop into resilient and inquisitive learners - skills needed to become lifelong learners.

Deliver an inspiring and engaging Maths curriculum, taught by highly enthusiastic staff, which sparks curiosity and excitement and nurtures confidence in Maths.

Implementation

Our school Maths scheme is built on the objectives of the National Curriculum. Teachers use a Mastery approach in lessons, adapting the curriculum for SEN pupils where necessary. We follow detailed calculation policies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 

In addition, we have Maths Meetings (Nursery to Y4) to practise and consolidate skills and Mental Maths in Y5 and Y6 to practise fluency of skills. Children from Y1 also develop times table knowledge, including daily Times Table Rock Stars. Skills are taught progressively, with opportunities to revisit and practise, ensuring a full coverage of the National Curriculum.

Pupil Progress meetings lead to carefully planned, bespoke interventions to support pupils where necessary. Progress is carefully monitored and 'no stone is left unturned' to enable children to reach and exceed their targets.
