INTENT

At Kirkby Avenue, we believe that all children should be given rich and stimulating opportunities in all areas of the arts. We strive to cultivate a real enjoyment of music and aim to deliver high quality music teaching, supporting and encouraging all children to achieve their full potential.

Music is essentially a practical subject which should be enjoyed by all. From an early age, children

have an awareness of rhythm, pitch and sounds around them and these should be developed from

the start of school. The music curriculum should offer them experiences that enable them to develop concepts and skills, but which also allows them to use their own ideas and express themselves freely.

At Kirkby Avenue Primary School we value music because it is a powerful and unique form of

communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It also increases self-discipline

and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfillment and it allows for the conveyance of ideas, thoughts and feelings which are common within and between all cultures.
 

SCHOOL AIMS
Through the teaching of music, the following whole school aims are to be reflected;

• To involve children in purposeful music making within numerous practical experiences.

• To develop and extend children’s musical skills, understanding and knowledge, with reference to the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and National Curriculum guidelines.

• To foster a love and understanding of music through active involvement in listening, appraising, composing and performing.

• To develop the learning skills of productive listening and concentration, appraising and evaluating their own and others’ work.

• To promote investigation and exploration within music making.

• To take into account the individual needs of all children, fostering self-esteem and confidence where everyone is valued.

• To promote an understanding and appreciation of the richness and diversity of world cultures and styles, times and periods.

• To develop skills that will benefit all areas of the school curriculum.

• To encourage opportunities to perform for the school and wider community.

• To actively engage in forging links and partnerships with the wider community.

To encourage confidence and high achievement in performing and composing.
