At Kirkby Avenue Primary School we strive to deliver our children a curriculum that is diverse and takes into account the cultures, races and religions of our world. We endeavour to ensure that all children are represented within our learning.
Below you will find some of the ways in which we do this:
· Resources that open up questions and conversation about a variety of different cultures and experiences.
· Celebrations of children’s heritage.
· Books that represent all children in our school, including but not limited to children with SEND needs, different cultures.
· Celebrations of key events in different religions.
Please see below the different places we have discussed in each Key Stage. We will continue adding to these maps as the year progresses so that you can see our progress.
We have also been working hard to ensure that we look at a diverse range of books as part of our teaching. Have a look below at some of the texts we have been looking at. We have really enjoyed them.
In Holly class, we read a book called 'We are all different'. We talked about the differences we can see (things like our hair colour, eye colour, skin colour) and the differences we can't see (such as our likes and dislikes, hobbies, skills we have etc).
We all started with a blank person outline and personalised it as a self-portrait. We decorated our mini-mes with coloured pencils, fabrics and other accessories, then wrote a sentence to tell other people about one reason we are special that people might not see.
As we also have a few different languages in Holly class that some of us speak at home, we tried to help to learn some simple ways to say hello. As well as English, we can now say hello in Polish, German, French, Spanish, Turkish and Farsi! We are very proud to be a diverse class and we love sharing all the things that make us special and unique.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
