Some children will find it hard to fulfill their academic potential because they have experienced or are experiencing issues that create barriers to learning. These barriers may be caused by many different things but could result in children needing emotional, pastoral, social and mental health support. With this support it is easier to help children to be ready for academic success.
We have a Mental Health, Pastoral and Social Interventions Manager on staff - Miss S Lockwood.
Her role is to liaise with staff and the wider Inclusion Team to ensure that all children's non academic needs are met.
All staff have a responsibility to spot when a child is in difficulty either academically or pastorally and to discuss that with either the SENCo or the Mental Health lead. Referrals for in school support are made and staff advised on what interventions to put in place in class and whether Miss Lockwood's team need to carry out other more intensive, 121 interventions.
All support staff can deliver in class emotional support e.g. 121 'Meet and Greet' in a morning to help settle the child down, or legotherapy, interventions for social communication. Other staff are trained in 'Sunbeams' ( for loss and separation) or 'Happy to Be Me' and 'Choose to Cope' - programmes for raising self-esteem and dealing with social anxiety.
If necessary bespoke, emotional, social, pastoral or mental health interventions are planned and put in place and / or referrrals to external agencies made ifmore expert health advice and support is needed.
